Greene County Courthouse History
Greene County's historic courthouse opened in 1912 and replaced an older courthouse on Springfield's public square. County history material describes the move from the square to Boonville Avenue and Central Street as controversial. The 1912 building later became too limited for modern county government, leading commissioners to build the Judicial Courts Facility north of the historic courthouse.
The historic building is Greene County's fourth courthouse. County ARPA materials describe a Neoclassical Revival, four-level rusticated stone building with a flat roof, rectangular plan, low dome over a rotunda, frontispiece projections, a main facade toward Central Street, and a secondary facade toward Boonville.
